Goldendoodles are designer dogs. They are a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Standard Poodle. Because of this, they inherit traits from both sides of their heritage. The result is a complex breed that rewards you for getting to know them better.

Poodles are athletic, happy, friendly dogs, with a weight ranging from 45-70lbs. Golden Retrievers are a sporting breed weighing 55-75lbs.

Because Goldendoodles are a mixed breed, it is difficult to know how much of each parent they will eventually inherit.  Sizes, personality traits, and coat types will differ. Depending on which genes your Goldendoodle inherits more of, they could have a straight, wavy, or curly coat type. All Goldendoodles have a base coat of either chocolate or black, but Goldendoodles come in a variety of colors.  It can be fun to research all the color choices and pick your favorites!

Goldendoodles are smart and eager to please. They are obedient, loyal companions. They are known for their friendly and loving disposition, becoming fast friends with children, other pets, and strangers.  They love to socialize and be with their owners making them happiest when with people.

While Goldendoodles are primarily bred as companion dogs, they have been successfully trained as therapy dogs, guide dogs and other forms of assistance dogs!

Poodles are one of the most intelligent breeds, and therefore, Goldendoodles too are very intelligent. Because of their intelligence, eager to please personality, and love of learning, training goes easily.

Doodles typically take after their Poodle parents resulting in little to no shedding. Though there is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic dog, these dogs are less likely to create allergic reactions than other breeds.

Depending on which genes your Goldendoodle inherits more of, they could have a straight, wavy, or curly coat type.  This means there is no one way to groom them.  Some may have smoother, easy to maintain coats.  Others may require daily brushing, bathing and even drying.  Owners should check with their veterinarian or trusted groomer to help them identify their Goldendoodle’s particular fur type and best way to groom their loving companions.

What’s a Merle Doodle?

Merle is not a color at all, but a gene developed when a Poodle is bred with an Australian Shepherd or Border Collie. This gene passed down from the Poodle parent, causes the coat to fade irregularly resulting is a unique pattern.
